Error - no such article number.

Jan 31, 2011 at 5:05 PM

I get these errors every 3-4 days with Win7, the Codeplex Community Bridge and Thunderbird.  It seems to start when I hit this error message:

Error!
Newsgroup server responded: no such article number in this group.
Perhaps the article has expired.

After this the links between the subject pane and the message body are broken for about 50% of messages.  Re-downloading forum headers fixes the problem for a few days.

I've never seen this on Thunderbird with regular newsgroups.  Turning off global indexing in TB has made no difference.  I'm going to try the MS bridges as a test.

This topic has appeared before in this forum and that was with Outlook Express.  The issue was not resolved.  Jochen Kalmbach's last reply was:

"The bridge is not able to address this issue, because it is simply forwarding the messageId from the web-service to the news-client.

Also be aware, that for example Thunderbird 2.* mixes threads if the subject is the same..."

I was just looking at Answers.en-US.w7repair to see if the subject was the same in mixed up threads (and mostly it was not) when I chanced to find the message body that should have been associated with a previously seen error.  The message ID is http://social.Answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7repair/thread/1c6ea4cc-aa63-43e9-8de9-122c23439016#57a871c4-a79c-4644-8dfe-6c95d2eff9ab and that certainly exists on the MS forum.

It would be very helpfull, if you could provide debug-data in the case, you have this effect.

You need to do the following in order to get debug-data:

Open the bridge; goto "Tool|Debug window..." check the boxes "NNTP", "Main" and "WebService".

Then use your NNTP-client to query for an article and wait until an error occurs (or if you know how to enforce the error, you can do this ;).

Then, after the error occured in your newsclient, click into the debug-output and select *all* lines (press home and then shift-end), then right-click and select "Copy selected lines to clipboard". Then paste these lines here into an reply...

Jan 31, 2011 at 9:41 PM

I am trying to follow your instructions.  I set the debug window in Community Bridge with the checks for NNTP, Main and Webservice.  I then open a message on Thunderbird that shows a *no such article* error.  Then you say "click into the debug-output".  Sorry to say that I can't find anything that calls itself debug-output.  Should I find this under Files, Tools or Help?

Coordinator

I mean: just click into the window, were you see the debug output... (the listbox in the window you activated the checkboxes for NNTP, Main and WebService. There you can select all entries in the listbox and right-click and select "Copy selected lines to clipboard" in the context menu.

Please find debug output below this message.  To post it here I had to cut more than 90%.  I hope I have left in the important bits.

I first tried the forum Answers.en-US.InternetExplorer because this is where I usually encounter problems.  This time all new messages were perfectly fine so I have deleted all of them.

I next looked at Answers.en-US.w7repair.  The first 28 messages were OK and I was reading towards the end of this long thread:

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7repair/thread/267525d1-0635-4da2-9c0b-1d4dd80c08b2#a361fd13-2f45-434b-939a-6c55e0fb2071

Here I got the "no such article number" error and after that threads became impossible to read because of being mixed with one onother.

Getting one of these three errors everytime I try to log in to my account. One out of 5 times I'll actually be able to see my desktop before it hits me with a BSOD.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

iaStor.sys

MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS

System

Sony VAIO VGN-FW530F/B

Windows 7 Home Premium

4GB RAM

Working on pulling up full specs but failing hard.

Can no longer log onto my account at all. As soon as I put my password in it blue screens.

Also have gotten some kind of Pointer error in the BSOD as well as a generic "detected an error and must shut down."

I feel like this thing is FUBAR. Help?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, but as per my edit, unfortunately I can't log into my account. I've tried Safe Mode, last good configuration, and Safe Mode with cmd. If I can somehow provide the minidump files to you some other way, please let me know. I can navigate around the comp, but this is just way over my head.

Hi,

If you have no access to the computer at all check with the System Maker (Motherboard Maker
for custom systems).

You can download the updated driver and then boot with a Windows 7 Installation Disk or a Windows
7 Repair Disk to update the driver. Copy the driver to a cd or dvd.

If you need to make a repair disk - this helps to repair Windows not re-install. This can be made on
any Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 machine with a burner as the process uses no files from the
Host Machine.

How to Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc (Option 2)
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

That disk can also be used to run Startup Repair and the install from the Command Prompt.

================================================================

You could also back up the data and re-install Windows 7. The hard drive can be put into another computer
as 2nd drive (best) or into an External USB case. Either would allow you to copy the data to removable
media such as CD, DVD, or other USB drives.

Or you could use an Ubuntu boot CD to back up the data.

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer

Hope this helps.

Alright, here's the current issue.

I've got a repair disk. I can boot from it fine and get into the menu. The problem comes with the drivers. I downloaded them and copied to the same disk I'm booting from. Now I can't boot from the CD and don't get the option to Load Drivers like I did previously. I'm still unable to get past my login, even in Safe Mode, so any other way to install the drivers would be a great help.

Also, here's the BSOD I have in front of me now.

Hi,

Do you have the BIOS set to boot to the CD/DVD first?

Use the COMMAND PROMPT of the Repair Disk to run the driver.

Contact the System Maker for their recovery methods.

BIOS is set to boot from my CD/DVD first, an external source second, and my HDD third. I used to get the "press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." before I loaded the drivers onto the boot CD.

Do I need a separate CD for the drivers?

I can still go into the same "repair your computer" menu, but I don't have the option to load drivers from my CD anymore.

Sony's recovery methods consist of a factory reset. I'll be that desperate in about 6 hours.

Can you link me to something that tells me how to do all this from the Command Prompt? I've googled it and came up with nothing.

Hi,

Create a new repair disk to boot from and then use the other disk to run the drivers. Something
must have damaged the 1st disk's ability to boot.

Sony has no other methods?

Hope this helps.

I made a second repair disk and I still can't get it to say boot from CD/DVD

As soon as I hit the power button, I'm holding F8 down, but instead of booting from CD, it takes me to an advanced boot menu screen for Windows 7 from the HDD. I can't get either CD to boot anymore.

Sony's website has 3 options. Previous System Image (which I don't have), the recovery option using F8 > System Recovery (tried this already), and boot from CD (which I can't do because neither CD I have will boot)

Just got a BSOD while just sitting at the login screen.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Not sure if this helps or not.

Hi,

You don't hold F8 down to boot to the disk. F8 takes you to the Safe Mode and Advanced Boot
Menu Screen.

Just set the BIOS to boot to the CD/DVD and put the disk in then reboot touching no keys.

Tried that as well. It just loads Windows up from the HDD. I can hear my drive spinning for a few seconds and the screen has the flashing underscore like it's about to say Boot from CD, but it just switches over to boot normally.

Did you make the repair disk using the Option 2? If so then either you do not have the BIOS
set to boot to CD/DVD first or there is an issue affecting the boot and you need technical
support.

Okay, CD #5 finally worked. The 3rd and 4th had errors so I had to turn the write speed down. I just have the boot files on this CD. When I boot, can I just pop the CD out and put the CD with the drivers in and load them like that?

Edit - I went ahead and put the disk with the files I downloaded from here

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFW530FB&LOC=3

It says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware."

All this is way out of my league. I'm not asking for you to type up a long list of steps or anything, but if you can link me to some instructions then that'd be awesome.

When I run the .exe, It tells me "the subsystem needed to support the image type is not present."

This is frustrating to say the least.

And of course I can't get into safe mode + cmd prompt to run sfc /scannow. It won't let me run it from the boot menu because there's apparently "a repair in progress."

From my first look, it seems like a bug in the newsreader... what are you using?

Maybe if you could upload *the whole* logfile, I would be able to see more clear...

You can upload files if you create a workitem:

The newsreader is Mozilla Thunderbird.  I'm afraid I did not retain the original debug report.

I'm continuing to read in debug mode but the error has not re-occured since five days.
