Problem Getting Bridge to Work At All

May 31, 2010 at 9:31 PM

I have similar problems with both the MS Bridge and the Community Bridge.

The interface between Agent 6 and the Bridge does not seem to work.  I suspect it is the environment I am running in:
Using VirtualBox 3.1.8
Host: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Guest: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Newsreader: Agent 6.
Bridge: Community NNTP Bridge Version with the debug settings uncommented

I installed Community NNTP Bridge ( and have the following settings:
NNTP-Port: 119
Auto start Checked
Auto minimize Checked

When starting the bridge I clicked on Prefetch newsgroup list and it shows DONE: (2546 newsgroups)

I started Agent 6 and deleted all existing folders.  I have one News Server defined
Host Name:
The server requires a secure connection (SSL) Unchecked
Login Method: No login is required
Enable server for onlineoperations Checked
Maimum allowed connections: 10
Connections reserved for body retrieval tasks: 1
Automatically adjust maximum connections Checked
Disconnect from server after 300 seconds of inactivity Checked
Send keep-alive message every 60 seconds Unchecked
Use a non-standard NNTP port Unchecked
The server creates messages out of order Unchecked
Use the XHDR command insted of XOVER Unchecked
Use binary search to sample headers by date Checked
Request compressed headers from server Checked
Use XHDR instead of LISTGROUP when compression is on Checked

Please note that with the exception of the Host and the value in the Disconnect from server the settings are the same as the ones I use when access the Microsoft newsgroups directly.

I then click on Tools\Newsgroup Directory and the Newsgroup Directory comes up.

It has a list of 2040 newsgroups left over from prior runs.  I click on Update Directory, select Downoad the complete list of all newsgroups and Download newsgroup descriptions and press OK.

Agent says it is Retrieving list of newsgroups from server but it times out after about three minutes.

To analyze the problem I:
Created a C:\Temp directory and gave full control to Everyong.
Uncommented the trace section of the config file and save it.
Restarted the Community NNTP Bridge.
Started Agent and again tried to download the list of all newsgroups.  Agent again timed out.
Closed Agent
Stop the Server
Closed the Community NNTP Bridge application.
Checked the C:\Temp directory -- it was empty.

What am I doing wrong?

First you should upgrade to V18.

Then start the bridge and try:

telnet localohst 119

And post the reply of this command.

C:\>telnet localhost 119

C:\>netstat -a -b

V18 seems to be working -- at least I was able to download the list of newsgroups.
